Indore : Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences (SUAS), the country’s first skill development university, officially started its operations in the city with a maiden batch of 250 students.
The university held an induction programme of the newly-admitted students.
Higher education minister Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya was chief guest of the function while Symbiosis Foundation president Padmabhushan Dr SB Mujumdar and vice president Swati Mujumdar and others were present.
Describing the launch of SUAS in the city as historic, SB Mujumdar, who is also chancellor of the university, said that it’s the country’s first skill development university.
“There are nearly 800 universities, about 38,000 colleges, around 8 lakh teachers and nearly 2 crore students in the institutions of higher learning in the country. But most of these institutions offer conventional courses like BCom, BA, BSc. India does not require such institutions today but vibrant institutions which can produce industry ready workforce,” he said.
Praising Symbiosis Foundation for launching skill development courses from its facility in Indore, Pawaiya stated that other universities should also think of introducing such skill based courses. “We also want our universities in the state to launch skill-based job-oriented courses like that of Symbiosis University so that more and more students get job or take entrepreneurial route,” he said.
The minister, however, stoked a potential controversy by stating that people having black money open colleges these days. “This is the reason that I don’t go to functions organised by private colleges,” he said clarifying that he came to Symbiosis’s function because it’s a committed university with high repute.
Classes of maiden batch of this university has commenced from Wednesday. The university has started operations with admissions in four courses including two BBA and two BTech programmes. The university would introduce more courses next year. Hostels with intake capacity of 1200 girls and 1200 boys are under-construction. The university has plans to invest Rs 250 crore in the development of campus.
Rs 15 crore machinery from Germany: Swati Mujumdar said that the institutes is importing machinery wroth Rs 15 crore from Germany for students of Indore campus. “This machinery will be helpful in enhancing skills of students,” she said adding that the Indore campus has been inspired by Germany’s skill development teaching model. Mujumdar further said that the university has partnered with 25 top notch companies of the country whose representatives will come to the campus and impart training to students. “We are soon going to launch a state-of-art training centre on the campus,” she said.
Symbiosis is the first project to take shape on Super Corridor: Symbiosis is the only project approved on Super Corridor that has come into being. Symbiosis University vice-chancellor MM Salunkhe boasted about this during his speech on Tuesday. “Many organisations were allocated lands alongside Super Corridor but we are the first one to complete the project. This mirrors our commitment and determination,” he said.
Foundation stone of Symbiosis University was laid about two years ago. A few months after that Narsee Monjee Institute had also laid its foundation stone alongside Super Corridor but its campus delayed due to a legal case. TCS and Infosys centres are under-construction and are likely to see day of light in next two years. Other approved projects are still to be started.
