In partnership with the Skills Council for Persons with Disability, the Department for International Development (DFID) organized an employer sensitization workshop with leading corporates of the country in Delhi. The event was conducted in Mumbai on 13th of November and in Delhi on 15th of November 2019.
The objective of the workshop was to make the employers aware of the nuances of special needs of persons with disability and workplace solutions to promote inclusion. The session was led by National Star College, an award-winning charitable organization of the UK specialized in delivery of sensitization trainings. The workshop was hosted by Xavier’s Research Centre for Visually Challenged.
The Delhi workshop graced the presence of Ms. Anu Gupta, Head Skills, Department for International Development (DFID). She opened the session with the commitment of DFID towards partnering with the Skill India Mission and efforts made for mainstreaming the employment for PwDs. She also emphasized on the various UK best practices of organizations and how the same can be incorporated in India.
Mr. Anup Srivastava, Chief Executive Officer, Skills Council for Persons with Disability touched upon the issues of recruitments and their commitment to overcome the hurdles. The introductory session looked upon the nuances of discrimination and the areas of concerns for persons with disability.
The participants were briefed on the legislation of the Indian government and how they can be adhered to while achieving the overall objectives of the concerned businesses. The session saw dynamic exchanges of challenges and their viable solutions. With both senior leadership and peers of the organization being present, the event also saw the discussions on the available strategies for incorporating the talent with specific impairments. Participants were also briefed on the needs of people with different disabilities and the limitations of treating them as a homogeneous group requiring same support, irrespective of the type of disability. Training also touched upon the use of assistive technologies at the workplace to support PwDs.
Both the events saw the participation of over 20 employers, including the likes of State Bank of India, Shoppers Stop, Big Basket, TCS, Mirchi and Meme, Sodexo, Lemon Tree, Reliance, Accenture, Mahindra, Chai point, etc. to name a few. Deliberations were held on reasonable housing strategies and the need for a harmonious work-life balance for the disabled employees. With a renewed commitment to furthering the agenda of diversity at workplaces, the employers expressed their proactive support to the inclusion of PwDs.
