Dissemination of study findings: Future job roles in operations and maintenance of Bio-CNG plants

New Delhi : Renewable energy sector is expected to be a major source of employment with 3 lakh new jobs being generated over the next 3-4 years. Biomass is one such promising area with Govt. of India’s focus on enhancing the installed capacity. With an increased capacity, the need for skilled and trained workforce also arises for which adequate training standards need to be in place.

Keeping in view the need to identify job roles within the Bio-CNG sector for which trainings standards will be required, a study was commissioned by DFID India, under the Skills for Jobs Programme, in collaboration with Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ). KPMG was the implementation partner to carry out the study.

Ms. Anu Gupta, Head of Skills, and Mr Sanjay Valsangkar, Senior Programme Manager, DFID India, briefed the audience about DFID, its work in India including in the skilling space, areas of India-UK collaboration in the field of Renewable Energy and opportunities for future collaboration.

Mr. Praveen Saxena, CEO SCGJ presented a brief on SCGJ and activities being taken up in the biomass sector. Hefurther focused on the need to understand the job profiles required in the market and create an occupational map for the same.

Dr. Parveen Dhamija, Senior Advisor to SCGJ spoke about the sectors in green business including waste management, the studies conducted in the past by SCGJ and occupational maps created for Bio-CNG sector, various government policies for the biomass sector and the work being done jointly with ministry and IOCL for development of Qualification Packs.

The keynote speaker of the event, Mr. Dinesh D Jagdale, Jt. Secretary MNRE, GoI spoke about the increasing use of biogas and bio-CNG and their contribution to Atmanirbhar Bharat. He briefed the participants about GoI’s plan to reduce crude and gas imports and replace the CNG imports by increasing the installed capacity in the country. He also focused on the potential of entrepreneurship, generating jobs and making people employable in the biomass sector through the same.

The event saw over 40 industry participants which included industry associations like Indian Biogas Association and industry participants like SLPP Renew, Pecma, Bio-energy India, Prespl, Organic recycling, etc. Tanmay Bishnoi from DFID Technical Assistance team presented the findings and recommendations of the study. This was followed by a discussion on the questions and comments from
the participants. The session ended with a vote of thanks from Ms Anu Gupta.
