Want to avail better employment opportunities or Willing to do something of your own? Opt for a vocational degree program instead of a traditional graduation program where you can get a chance to become skilled as well as academically qualified.
The Bachelor of Vocational popular as BVoc Programme being offered at Kalindi College, Ramanujan College and Jesus and Mary College, will have ‘multiple entry and exit’ points. It means the student can leave the course at the end of first year and second year with a diploma degree and an advance diploma degree respectively.
Those who complete the course will get a Degree. “Students can come back to complete the course even if they leave after the first or second year. This gives students a lot of flexibility in case they want to take a break from studies and work,” said Nikhil Rajput, nodal officer for the courses at Ramanujan College.
Students from all streams can apply for the course. Applicants have to fill the central registration form and admission will be done based on cutoffs. The courses were introduced at DU last year, but the admission happened in September as the approval had come late.
At Jesus and Mary College there are two courses available – Retail Management and IT, and Health Care Management. At Kalindi College, students can opt for Printing Technology or Web Designing. Similarly, at Ramanujan College, there are two BVoc courses — Banking Operations and Software Development.
“The course has 40% general education components and 60% skill education components. So, the students get to know the academics of the subject as well as the industry requirements and practical applications,” said Sunita Narain, nodal officer for the courses at Jesus and Mary college.
Rajput said the course provides a judicious mix of skills relating to a profession and appropriate content of general education, so that students are work-ready at each exit point of the programme.
“It also integrates NSQF (national skill qualification framework) within the undergraduate level of higher education in order to enhance employability of the graduates and meet industry requirement,” he said.
“Students doing software development can become junior software developers, web developers, data associates and software developers depending on when they exit the course,” said Rajput.
Narain said students can become floor managers, duty managers, customer relation executives and also work at non-clinical positions in hospitals after doing retail management and IT, and health care management courses.
These courses have been developed by the UGC as per NSQF of Ministry of Skill Development emphasizing on skill-based education in consultation with National Skills Development Corporation.
