Guwahati : Popular actor and social philanthropist Victor Bannerjee on Tuesday met with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for a slew of developmental activities focusing on harnessing skills, physical health and vocational courses to be taken up at Bannerjee’s Moran Blind School at Moran in upper Assam.
First on the cards will be an opening of a pottery section in the school as part of a skill development centre that will enable visually impaired school students learn about the art.
The centre is expected to be opened in February by Sonowal. This will be followed by setting up of a gym at the school by late June and a vocational centre in the next couple of years.
“I had a great conversation with Sonowal. He is full of energy and is willing to extend help in the developmental activities that will be taken up at the school. This has been aimed at enhancing the skills of the students and enabling them to harness the best possible skills for their lives ahead,” said Bannerjee.
The pottery section will have two wheels. Students will have access two pottery wheels and will be given lessons on how to craft objects from sheets of clay.
Bannerjee told that how Moran shares close ties with both Sonowal and former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. The school was set up by Bannerjee’s father Major SN Bannerjee, a retired army officer who then served at the tea plantations in upper Assam.
Victor since the eighties has been running the school after taking the mantle. The school is nestled amidst a lush setting in the outskirts of Moran town. It is spread across a 10 bigha plot and provides free education and boarding facilities to over 60 to 70 visually impaired students.
