Haridwar : In July 2016, the company opened its first centre at Ludhiana to provide skillsets to unemployed youth. The maximum eligibility criteria for enrollment in the centre is a Class 12th pass followed by an intelligence quotient test.
The establishment of the skill development centre was initiated after a survey undertaken by Ernst & Young on behalf of Rockman which has collaborated with the National Skill Development Corp for certification of courses.
At present, the Ludhiana centre provides training in four skills to youth looking for employment in the light engineering industry. This encompasses electrician training, welding skills, machine fitting and CNC machine operators training with courses having a three-and-a-half-month duration with two-and-half months spent in classroom training and the rest in on-the-job training in local factories. In addition, soft skills and basic computer training are also imparted.
Suman Kant Munjal, CMD, Rockman Industries, told Autocar Professional that local factories requested the skill centre to send the trainees as apprentices to undergo shopfloor training at its units. “There is a shortage of skilled workmen in Ludhiana and hence the need to start the skills development centre that will also enable youth to get employment.”
Similar skilling activities will be undertaken at Haridwar in rented premises. But Munjal said that the company has plans to set up a mother training centre as well as a train-the-trainer facility in Ludhiana within a year. Construction work on the centre, which will offer a larger bouquet of 10-12 training courses, has commenced.
Another skills development centre is expected to be established at Bawal where the company has one of its manufacturing facilities. The centre will be operational within six months.
“Within a year, we plan to skill 10,000 workers across three centres under the NSDC approved guidelines,” confirmed Ujjwal Kant Munjal, executive director, Rockman Industries.
