With the aim to boost employment opportunities through skill training of the youth of Punjab, a Rockman Skill Development Centre was inaugurated in the city today. It will offer courses in industrial training, basic computer literacy and soft skills.
The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Dr Karan Avtar Singh, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab; DC Ravi Bhagat, and Rakesh Verma, secretary and Mission Director, Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM). It will function in close coordination with the National Skill Development Centre. To begin with, it will train the youth in industrial vocations, soft skills and basic computer literacy.
A pilot batch with 94 students has already started training in courses for the CNC operator, fitter, electrician and welder. After graduation, the students will be industry-ready and have employment opportunities in the manufacturing units in the state.
The district has a robust industrial base with a mix of MSMEs and large enterprises, contributing 29.73 per cent to the state’s overall manufacturing output. These facts came to light following a survey conducted by Rockman Industries in collaboration with Ernst and Young (EY). “There is a huge opportunity to train and skill the youth to meet the growing demand for skilled manpower of the local industry,” said Suman Kant Munjal, chairman and MD, Rockman Industries.
The survey team visited villages, slums and other heavily populated colonies and interacted with the youngsters. “The larger purpose of the survey was to understand the gap between employment opportunities and employment readiness of the youth in Ludhiana. The demand for skilled workforce is the need of the hour, as it leads to long-term employment, in turn ensuring manufacturing growth. Anticipating and building competencies among the youth will also enable workers and enterprises to adapt to the rapid pace of change. A competent and skilled workforce in Ludhiana is a win-win situation for both workers and enterprises as it improves productivity, increases efficiency and output,” he added.
