New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India, the country largest passenger vehicle maker, felicitates the first batch of 215 students with NCVT (National Council on Vocational Training) certificates. This is the first time when any automobile company is awarding NCVT certificates under the government’s Skill Development initiative.
These students have successfully completed their two-year Craftsmen Training in Automotive Manufacturing, and Automotive Service and Repair, courses offered by the company at its training academy.
KP Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship presented the certificates to the students, along with Rajesh Uppal, Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki had signed a Flexi MoU, in October 2014, with Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, to give skill training to 10th and 12th pass youth. Under the Flexi MoU, the company runs two-year and one-year Craftsmen Training Programme in Automotive Manufacturing, and Automotive Service and Repair, to create a pool of skilled manpower ready to be absorbed within the automobile industry.
For this, the company has developed a customized training curriculum with high focus on practical training – 80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theory. This model prepares and equips the students to be employed as workshop mechanics, sales representatives, and workmen or become entrepreneurs.
The training also follows learn and earn model, and the company has borne all the expenses related to training of the selected candidates, during their training. Till date, 2,000 students have been enrolled for the two-year training course at Maruti Suzuki Training Academy.
Apart from offering NCVT courses from Maruti Suzuki Training Academy, the company has teamed up with government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) to help students level up the learning curve, and actively engages with over 141 ITIs across 27 states to foster skill development.
The company offers support in infrastructure improvement, faculty training, exposure to manufacturing facilities, training in acclaimed Japanese work practices like 5S, kaizen and 3G and soft skills like personality development and teamwork.
In 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki took the initiative to a new level by setting up Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres (ASEC). The ASECs are model service workshop equipped with vehicles and latest tools and equipment. At present, the company has successfully set up 60 ASECs across the country.
