Telecom Sector Skill Council CEO Arvind Bali talks about Future of Skills and Employment in Drone Technology

Isn’t the concept of machine flying sound amazing? Constant innovations in technology are growing at a fast pace, playing a great role in transforming our lives. Yes, we are talking about ‘Eye in the Sky’ technology that has been increasingly adopted for different purposes across various industries. Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are equipped with state-of-the-art remote control systems, GPS, HD cameras, and autopilot functions. Also referred to as a ground cockpit, drones are controlled by remote ground control systems (GSC).

The drone technique has emerged as a boon during the Corona transition. Many states of the country especially Gujarat, Telangana, Maharashtra has used the drone for different purposes during Lockdown, whether for monitoring an area, sanitizing or thermal scanning, it has proved to be an excellent technique in all places. In view of this, there is a great possibility of increasing its utility in future.

From real estate to construction, agriculture to logistics, and wind energy to defense industries, drones have entered many major markets and are benefiting them to a great extent. The telecom industry is one of the recent industries being revolutionized by UAVs. Drones offer an ideal tower inspection solution to the telecom companies through visual analysis and aid in digitizing assets for tower companies.

Indian Drone Market Size –

The Indian UAV market has grown over a period of time. According to the 6Wreserach consulting firm, the Indian drone market size is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 18% by 2023. Drones are at the forefront of the new-age generation technological shift and so, many big corporate companies are investing heavily in the drone space. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International predicts that there will be more than lac new jobs in unmanned aircraft and drone technology by 2025, and the global market for commercial applications of drone technology is expected to reach $127 billion by 2020. New drone jobs will be created across a wide span of industries. In a recent report, FICCI and EY projected that the value of the Indian UAV industry and the market would be around US $885.7 million by 2021. The widening possibilities for which UAVs can be used thanks to their flexible and rapidly evolving software and hardware, has led to their employment in a variety of fields.

Job opportunity in Drone segment

Drone technology, however, makes it easier to capture visual information and utilize data through enhanced computer models. UAVs offer a great market opportunity for equipment manufacturers, investors, and business service providers.

Employment opportunity area would be passive infrastructure (ground, training center), active infrastructure (Drone hardware and software), drone services and maintenance (customer support, call centers), data drone collection and processing, Pilot/operator, engineer, Link engineer, and some sectors which are connected to the drone. Things are getting automated which is changing the existing job profiles and leading to upskilling. Many of the things which required human intervention are now getting automated. At the same time, new types of jobs are emerging.

According to the report of the industrial organization FICCI, millions of jobs related to drones will be created in the next 4 to 5 years. These jobs will be available in many fields including aerial photography, cinematography, farming, 3D modeling, artificial intelligence and, manufacturing.

Requirement of Skill in Drone Technology –

In view of future employment prospects and career opportunities, Telecom Sector Skill Council formed under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is in the process of designing a curriculum related to drone technology. Low-level to high-level skills will be required in the field of UAV technology. However, skill gaps exist among the workforce and there is a need to fill that gap. Different modules are being worked on by the council to reduce the skill gap so that youth can become skilled and able to get employment in the industry.

Future of Drone Technology

Recently, the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued draft guidelines on UAS through a circular titled “Requirements for Operation of Civil Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS). The UAV ecosystem within India is currently host to only a handful of companies that are manufacturing and catering to the consumers. These companies are also concerned about the ongoing discussions on UAS regulations and the fact that they may not be able to meet the market demands.

In the next few years, India will be the largest importer of drones worldwide. It will also leave many countries behind in terms of usage. Drones have now started being used in industries on large scales. This aerial vehicle will replace the need for manpower and will create new employment opportunities for people in this new area. These jobs will not only be in the form of remote pilots, but there will also be a dire need of skilled people on the front like drone engineering, operations, monitoring, sales, and marketing.

Unmanned systems are not very different, but technically skilled people are still needed during drone operation. There are currently 40,000 drones in India, operated by trained drone pilots. Drone pilots in India should not be less than 18 years of age and should be trained as private pilot license holders. They should have proficiency in drone operations. It is also included in colleges as part of unmanned systems or flight training. For those who have specialized training like a drone pilot or system engineer, it is easy to work or get self-employed.
