George Town : The Penang government encourages the state’s workforce and high school graduates to join the German Dual Vocational Training (GDVT) programme to develop industry-ready skills.
GDVT is a joint collaboration between the state government, Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) and German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), aimed at ensuring a consistent supply of highly-skilled and industry-ready workers as the talent pipeline for future business needs.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yew said the state government recognised the importance of talent development in sustaining and accelerating Penang’s economic growth.
He believes that the constant engagement and consultation with the stakeholders is not only necessary but also a critical factor in ensuring the consistent growth of the business environment in Penang.
“We (the state government) are currently funding RM3,000 per apprentice for the Skills Diploma level and an additional RM1,000 per apprentice for the Advanced Skills Diploma level. On top of that, we have also made financial provision for marketing and promotional activities to raise awareness and promote GDVT to school students,” he said during the second PSDC-GDVT engagement and industry dialogue, here, today.
Chow said the GDVT programme was one of the most effective and sustainable ways to create a multi-skilled future workforce for the industry and the state was making good progress in this.
“This year alone, we launched two new specialised GDVT programmes, namely the Electronics in Automation Technology Programme under the technical track and the Industrial Management Programme under the commercial track, besides the existing Mechatronics Programme,” he said.
In September 2015, the Penang government signed a RM2 million sponsorship agreement with PSDC to finance the GDVT programme in the state.
To date, there are 11 host companies in the GDVT programme and a total of 140 apprentices having participated since 2015.
