Putrajaya (Malaysia) : Vocational College students who wish to pursue their bachelor’s degree can do so by choosing one of two options.
The Education Ministry said the first method is through the Malaysian Qualifications Agency’s Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), or by acquiring Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM) which has been converted by the Examination Board into Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
“The SVM holder must have three credits, obtaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.33 for academics and 3.67 for vocational; credits in Bahasa Malaysia; and competency in all vocational modules. “The second method is by obtaining a special approval from the Higher Education Ministry until the diploma programme, earning full accreditation,” it said in a statement.
The ministry was responding to today’s Berita Harian exclusive report on vocational graduates without SPM who are not qualified to pursue their bachelor’s degrees. The report said the graduates are not qualified to continue their studies at the bachelor’s degree level, in spite of having obtained the Diploma Vokasional Malaysia, as it is not recognized by public universities.
The ministry said the Vocational Education Transformation is aimed at mainstreaming vocational education to be on par with mainstream education.
“The transformation also aims to produce skilled and semi-skilled labour with a target of 70 percent being in the job market, 20 percent pursuing studies and 10 per cent becoming entrepreneurs. The vocational graduates have received recognition from various industries and 83.1 percent are employed in relevant fields within three months after graduation,” it said.
