Bengaluru : The Centre has decided to train college dropouts in English and various other skills to give them job opportunities, said Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, on Monday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a two-day Security Skills and Leadership Summit 2016 organized by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rudy said: “Those who have dropped out of schools and colleges are earning barely 5,000-Rs 8,000 a month because they have not acquired the required skillsets needed for the jobs they are working for.
“If skills, along with English language teaching are imparted to plumbers, security guards, painters and other job professionals, then their salary would be higher and jobs get secured.”
The minister said that while after Independence, education was given preference, the focus on skill training was less. “In India, there are one crore plumbers and there is a demand for more. If a security guard is given training in skill development such as driving and English among others, then he/she has the opportunity to earn Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 a month.”
Meanwhile, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) president Kunwar Singh said that there are 70 lakh security guards in India and there is a need for an additional 50 lakh.
