The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) of the Indian Government signed a MoU with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to develop a National Action Plan for Skill Development in the Telecom Sector. The key objective of the MoU is to utilize PSUs under the DoT to fulfil the requirement of skilled manpower in the telecom sector, and at the same time provide quality opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.
The MSDE has discharged its responsibilities through the Directorate General of Training (DGT), the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) for successful implementation of the MoU. The MSDE and DoT have agreed to make joint efforts towards skill development by mobilizing financial support under the National Ecosystem for Development of Telecom Skills by suggesting PSUs to use a minimum of 20% CSR funds for skilling purposes. Also, under the partnership, the MSDE, and the DOT will make coordinated efforts to revive old telephone exchanges of PSUs which are no longer in use to develop and upgrade skills. A new Department, National Institute for Policy Research Innovation and Training (NTIPRT), will be set up to train and improve skill development in the telecom sector by utilizing the infrastructure and facilities.
Commenting on the partnership, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Communications and Information and Technology said in a statement: “India is currently the second-largest telecommunication market and has the third highest number of internet users in the world. With the advent of newer technology in communications every day and our focus on Digital India and Make in India, there will be consistent requirement for skilled and up-skilled manpower. Skill India is must for the country and the youth should explore this opportunity to become job ready.”
