A study by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has shown that Pune will require more than 1.5 crore skilled people by the year 2022, but a majority of the workforce available will be in the unskilled category. Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, said, “It is imperative that we have a job ready skilled workforce in Maharashtra to meet the high requirement.”
The NSDC has around 400 centres in Maharashtra alone that provide training in sectors like telecom, apparel, agriculture, banking financial services and insurance, building and construction, electronic and IT hardware.
The NSDC report, prepared after compiling data for the year 2015, also hinted at excess supply of human resource at the minimally skilled level. “This workforce will need to be trained and upgraded to meet future requirements. But a majority of the migrant labour force is found at the minimally skilled level. Thus the state will struggle to find enough people at the semi-skilled and skilled levels,” said Rudy. He added, it is imperative that we have a job-ready skilled workforce in the state to meet the high demand. Besides training the youth, the NSDC will provide hem employment opportunities.
The sectors such as building, construction and real estate, organized retail, banking financial services and insurance, IT, ITeS are the areas which are high in demand in Maharashtra, the study shows.
So far, the Union government has identified 11 high-demand trades in the state: construction, production and manufacturing, textile, automobile, hospitality, healthcare, banking financial services and insurance, retail, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, IT& ITeS and agro processing.
A Maharashtra State Skill Development Society has also been formed as a single nodal agency for a skill development initiative, said Rudy. “For a city like Pune, which has a large number of young employable population, it is imperative that the government and the industry is able to provide them apt skills training,” the minister said.
According to the NSDC report, 4.18 lakh individuals in the state have been trained, of which 2.23 lakh have already secured jobs. In Pune, 28,712 candidates have been trained, of which 11,918 have been placed.
Taking benefit of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana(PMKVY), 34,334 candidates have completed their training in Maharashtra in job roles in sectors like automotive, agriculture, beauty and wellness, food processing among others. In Pune, 7,198 candidates have completed their training in more than 19 sectors out of which 1043 have already been certified. Officials said that the NSDC had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) for skill-based training at the student level, to train around 1 lakh students. The training is provided to undergraduate and postgraduate students. As per NSDC, a Knowledge Management Center has also been proposed to be setup at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration, Pune.
