Specialized Training Program in Semiconductor Technology to be launched for Tribal Students

New Delhi : The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with IISc Bangalore will provide basic training and advanced training to tribal students, in semiconductor technology.

The Ministry has entrusted the project ‘Semiconductor Fabrication & Characterization Training for Students from Tribal Community’ to Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru under the central sector scheme – Tribal Research Information, Education, Communication and Events (TRI-ECE) during the financial year 2023-24.

While replying to a question in Lok Sabha recently, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs mentioned that the project aims to provide comprehensive training in semiconductor technology to 2,100 tribal students over the next three years, offering certifications at NSQF levels 6.0 and 6.5. In collaboration with IISc Bangalore, the Ministry will deliver foundational training to 1,500 tribal students and advanced training to an additional 600 students. Eligible participants are those holding degrees in engineering disciplines.

According to IISc Bangalore has informed that the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has established six large Nano centers, including IISc, to facilitate training in semiconductor technology. These centers have a significant representation of students from the tribal community, in alignment with reservation policies. Besides degree programs, these centers also offer short-term training courses under the Indian Nanoelectronics Users Program (INUP). However, this collaboration with MoTA marks the first dedicated training program exclusively for tribal communities.
