Bhopal : Several states in the country have adopted Madhya Pradesh sports department’s initiative ‘Hum Chhuenge Aasman’, which develops skills through socio-psycho-spiritual, educational and economic empowerment of women, particularly from tribal areas through excellence in sports.
The initiative has made its strong presence felt at the national level, as around a dozen states are in the process of implementing the model in their respective states. It was also awarded with the prime minister award at a function organized in New Delhi last year.
The scheme was started in 2006 with the launch of the sports academies at Tatya Tope Stadium. The project covers female athletes from all 50 districts, 218 blocks and sports associations. Selected women athletes from all over the state are brought to the sports academies for skill development.
Under this initiative, the department provides scientific training through expert coaches, improving health through balanced and nutritional diet, free formal education to create employment opportunities, attractive prize money and assured government jobs to athletes of eminence.
Around 3000 athletes have benefitted from the scheme. States like Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Goa, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir have evinced keen interest and started the process to the implement the scheme.
Staff College, Hyderabad, has been made coordinator to implement the scheme across the country. Project incharge of ‘Hum Chhuenge Aasman’ at Staff College, Hyderabad, S Ramu said, “It is a fantastic scheme. The PMO has given college staff college the responsibility to spread the scheme across the country and motivate them to adopt the model.”
Earlier this year, representatives of these states had visited the capital to understand how MP has implemented the scheme. During the visit, director sports, Goa, VM Prabhu Desai, had said, “This is an excellent initiative in the field of sports. I went personally visited the facilities. It can bring revolution in the country, if it is properly implemented.” Deputy project coordinator, Odisha government, Sarita Kanungo, had also hailed the initiative.
Director Sports, Upendra Jain, said, “It is good to see that MP’s sports model has become a hit at the national level. We are in the process of implementing more such schemes in the near future.”
