New Delhi : FICCI, the leading business chamber of commerce organized its flagship skill event “FICCI Global Skill Summit 2016” yesterday 15th September at FICCI Head Quarters at New Delhi.
Policy Makers from Government of India, Experts from Academia, Industry, Service Sector, World Bank, ILO and other responsible segments of the skill ecosystem from the India and abroad were brought to a common platform to address the needs of the present and focusing “Skilling for the Future”.
Shri Rohit Nandan, Secretary, MSDE, Govt. of India said that it is essential that a seamless industry value chain is created to engage the trained and certified workforce. Industry led Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) were created to harmonize the demand for skilled workers required by the industry and the skilling needs to suffice the demand.
The Secretary said that the government had handed over the entire skilling ecosystem to the private sector and it was now up to them to benchmark standards and train the workforce accordingly to make them employable not just within India but also overseas. He also assured that the government would continue to fund various skilling programmes and urged the industry to allocate a part of its CSR funds towards skilling.
The Secretary said that the new wave of development was riding on robotics that would make many jobs redundant. However, the space of robot designing, production, software, electronics could be the explored to create new job opportunities. If India is able to anticipate the future job scenario then the country would be ready to take the lead in this area like it did in IT sector, he said. He also pointed out that it was critical to benchmark Indian standards in accordance with international markets.
“India needs a state-wise skill development programme and incentives to create industry in areas where labour is present,” TV Mohandas Pai, chairman of FICCI Skill Development Committee said.
Shri Maneesh Garg, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development shared the development undergoing on integrating Education with Skill Ecosystem to support “Skill India Mission”.
UBER President, Amit Jain announced “”UBER-Shaan”, a skill development initiative by UBER in association with Maruti Suzuki and NSDC to create skilled driving workforce of 1 million.
Onno Ruhl, Country Director-World Bank highlighted the World Bank eagerness to contribute to skilling ecosystem of India. Shabnam Sinha , Sr. Education Specialist shared how the World Bank has planned to encourage industry to come forward for skill development. She shared that every 1USD invested by corporates in skilling will be complemented by 1USD investment from World Bank. She told that, a dedicated USD 200 Million fund is allocated to promote the cause.
A session on “Skills for Migration: Mobility”, chaired by Mr. Sushil Ramola initiated a focused discussion in which Ms. Pannuda Boonpala, Director-India, ILO, shared how and why the migration should be considered for skill development initiatives.
Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Vice President-Amity University, highlighted how Industry-Academia can collaborate to create a 100% employability centric skill ecosystem. He shared the a brief case study of Amity-Tata venture for skill development.
Mr. Sanjay Vijaykumar, Chairman-Startup Village, shared how the startups can ease the training delivery and make a continual self upgrading system of skill development. He highlighted the need of speed in learning system and requirement of MOOCs for skill development training delivery.
Mr. Ashok Reddy, CEO&Co-Founder Teamlease, shared the importance of coordinated efforts required for 3Es namely Education, Employability and Employment. He also shared the importance of training and re-skilling to make youth as per the industry demand.
FICCI also released “Re-Engineering Skill Ecosystem”, a research study jointly initiated by FICCI -KPMG.
Key dignitaries namely Sh. Manish Kumar, CEO- NSDC, Mr. Bijay Sahoo, President-HR, Reliance, Mr. R Chandrashekhar, President-NASSCOM, Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO-NITI Aayog attended various panel discussions on skill development.
Sh. Bijay Sahoo, President-HR, Reliance and Co-Chair, FICCI Skills Development Committee concluded the event paying thanks to all participants, FICCI Skills Team members including DFID Project team Shiv Shukla, Abhishek Das, Kaustubhi, Mallika Marwah, Atishai Saxena and other volunteers who all organized the event and paid special thanks to Ms. Shobha Mishra Ghosh leading the skills department at FICCI.
