To set up a platform for women to develop their skills and empower them, the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) and UN Women joined hands on Tuesday. The partnership aims to link women’s economic empowerment to ending violence against women.
The partnership was unveiled at a conference called ‘WeUNite’, which explored skill development and women entrepreneurship, and was attended by UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka at Colaba on Tuesday.
Speaking about the partnership, Radhika Nath, President of Ladies’ Wing IMC, said, “The role of the partnership is to make social change in empowering women and to develop their skills and make a social platform available for women in the rural as well as urban areas.”
The conference was part of a campaign, ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender based Violence’ which is observed from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to December 10, Human Rights Day, across the world. The campaign aims at raising awareness about all forms of violence against women, promoting human rights and communicating the issue through various mediums.
“Violence against women is a violation of women’s rights and a setback for the society. There is also a direct link between violence against women and their ability to participate effectively in the economy, including lost workdays, lower income, increased public expenditure and lost opportunities for education, employment and political participation. To prevent and end violence against women, it will require all major institutions in the society to work together, to provide services to victims and survivors of violence” said UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka at the event.
“The ‘WeUNite’ partnership addresses gender equality and violence against women. This is a broad partnership with UN Women which focuses on social entrepreneurship and skill building, and we look forward to working together with UN Women,” said Deepak Premnarayen, President IMC.
