Bengaluru : The Karnataka state government is planning to host Bengaluru Skill summit as an annual event from next year, said Revenue, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister R.V.Deshpande.
The time is ripe for such an annual event as the government has created a separate department of Skill Development, Skill Missions and Skill Development Authority. The government is signaling its commitment in the field of job creation, he said in his speech at the inaugural of the three-day Bengaluru Tech summit.
Quess Corp Chairman Ajit Isaac hailed the idea as a strategic move by the government and create more confidence in the success story of Karnataka. “Bangalore is one of the largest net job creators in India, and should therefore lead the way with regard to public policy and creation of forums to bring employers and skilling institutes together to further influence the growth of job market,” he told ET.
Karnataka Skill Academy, Deshpande said, will be a reality very soon, and the government has earmarked 20 acres of land.
Several corporates including Siemens are helping the government skill about 20,000 youth in areas such as robotics, mechatronics, and IoT. In addition, Dassault Systems is helping the government set up four centres of excellence in Hyderabad-Karnataka area, he said.
Deshpande said, Karnataka expects to triple its IT workforce to three million in seven years and is looking to increase the IT contribution to domestic IT products/services revenue from the current 17% to 25% by 2025. The State also expects to have over 20,000 startups, a four-fold jump by 2025 from the 5,000 startups. “The scale of operation in Karnataka for startups far surpasses any other State. Karnataka right now couldn’t be better for startups,” he said.
The number of IT companies in Karnataka, the Minister said, has increased over the years from 1036 companies in 2001-02 to over 3500 companies today. Karnataka’s share in India’s total exports of IT has also increased from 25% in 2010-2011 to 38% in 2016-17.
In a first-of-its kind initiative, Karnataka is all set to launch an exclusive Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Bengaluru, he said.
