Make ‘skills’ for the country’s youth top priority : Prime Minister Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his council of ministers and the top bureaucracy to focus on ‘skills’ for the country’s youth and make it the top priority.

At a recent meeting of the sectoral group of secretaries, Modi had sought recommendations, to bring in new and impactful steps for skilling the youth, within a week. By January 10, all ministries are learnt to have written out reams on what needs to be done to arm India’s unemployed youngsters with adequate and relevant skills to earn a living.

Modi is also learnt to have suggested that skill set requirement could be mapped effectively against the life cycle of a newborn-starting from the mother’s needs during the pregnancy, the medical and social care of available for the infant, his/her education and so on. Training people with skill sets specific to these needs could open a whole new area of demand-based employment,according to the Prime Minister. While he took stock of recommendations for a five-year vision plan for the education sector, Modi is learnt to have pointed out that while efforts in education are important and will always be made, a strong focus is imperative on skills.

This focus on skills, however, is not new. The NDA government when it came to power in 2014 set up a separate and dedicated ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship to reap the demographic dividend. Skill India Mission was launched a in 2015 to help skill developemnet of over 400 million youngsters by 2022.
