Chennai: Emphasizing on the importance of skill training while attending a workshop on Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) at Anna University, Dr Avinash S Pant, vice-chairman of AICTE, stressed on how hands on training in the industry equips one to take up a job in the field.
The vice-president of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Dr K Manivannan said opportunities are aplenty for skilled students. He said, “With several government initiatives such as Digital India and Make in India in the pipeline, students who have undergone skill training can explore a lot of opportunities.
The PMKVY aimed at school dropouts and Class 8 students onward will provide training in engineering skills and also provide them with jobs.” It provides 250 hours training in both laboratory and theory. Engineering and polytechnic colleges approved by AICTE have been asked to come forward to contribute towards training students. Institutes can help train students during the non working hours using their faculty, resources and infrastructure. This training looks to provide 109 million skilled youths by 2022.
Institutes who have signed up to provide training should train a minimum of 100 unemployed youth every year. The PMVKY has a target of training close to 10 lakh students every year. The PMKVY is based on the national occupation standards (NOS) prescribed by the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) under the national skill qualification framework (NSQF).
Dr Avinash S Pant suggested, “An additional 50 hour can be included in the training where students can be provided with industrial training which is essential in the field. The institutions should be in contact with the relevant industries and should ensure students get hands on experience in the field.”
Dr R Srinivasan, Director of MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), Dr. R. Rudramoorthy, Chairman of Southern Region AICTE, Dr R S Rathore, Director of AICTE, Dr Usha Natesan, Advisor 1 to AICTE, Apoorva, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, S. Madhumathi, Directorate of Technical Education were present at the workshop.
