Guwahati: The Assam government told the Assembly on Wednesday that skill training agencies, engaged by it, have been asked to provide compulsory placements to youths, who are provided training under its schemes.
Replying to the questions by Duliajan BJP legislator Terash Gowala, industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said 249 training agencies, which are providing skill development courses, had been asked to ensure placements following complaints that the youths struggled to get employment after completion of their courses.
As many as 21,080 unemployed youths have been enrolled in 249 training centres in 28 districts by the Assam Skill Development Mission so far. The state has 16,65,866 educated and unemployed youths registered with the employment exchanges till December 31 last year.
Patowary said 369 youths have been provided jobs at the fair, organized here by the directorate of employment and vocational training here on July 26 and July 27 last year.
“After the vocational courses conducted by the directorate, the trainees are provided on-the-job training as apprentice. Hyundai Motors, Toyota Motors and Tata Motors have such apprentice centres in Guwahati, Nalbari, Nagaon and Tinsukia where such youths are being provided apprentice training. The industrial training institute (ITI) for women here have started light-motor vehicle driving course for both men and women, while a short-term beautician course is also being conducted for women. There is also a three-month industrial sewing machine operator course in the ITI. Samsung Electronics Pvt. Limited has started a Samsung Technical School for on-the-job training,” Patowary said in his written reply.
He said efforts are on to turn employment exchanges in Guwahati and Jorhat into model career centres under the National Career Service Scheme, with a similar plan for employment exchanges in Silchar, Haflong and Nagaon. “Through the model career centres, candidates will be able to register their names for jobs online,” he said.
