UNESCO celebrates 52 International Literacy Day with ‘Literacy and Skill Development’ goal this year

Paris : September 8 marks the 52nd International Literacy Day and it is celebrated all over the world. This year, the day will be celebrated with a new theme — Literacy and Skill Development. UNESCO emphasizes that it is an opportunity for Governments, civil society and stakeholders to highlight the improvements in world literacy rates and reflect on the remaining literacy challenges. Literacy is the key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is adopted by world leaders in September 2015 to promote universal access to quality education and learning opportunities. The agenda targets ensuring that the young generation achieves literacy and numeracy and the adults who lack the skill should be given the opportunity to acquire them.

This year’s theme explores integrated approaches that support the development of literacy and skills to improve people’s lives. It also contributes towards equitable and sustainable societies. This day focuses on skills and competencies that are required for employment, careers and livelihood.

As far as the history goes, September 8 was declared International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals and society.
