Ahmedabad : A unique centre for special skill training was inaugurated in Ahmedabad by Shakuntala Gamlin, the secretary of the department of empowering people with disabilities, on Saturday. The centre, which will train people in coding, design and data analytics, has been established by a city-based social enterprise, Radical Skills Education and Research Centre (RSERC). Interestingly, it will be the first institute in India which will impart specialized IT skills to people with disabilities. The organization has joined hands with global computing and software giants for the initiative.
“The centre will help create a plethora of opportunities for physically challenged people, putting their abilities to best use. The department of skill development under the Union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship, has earmarked a fund of Rs 70 crore to support such initiatives for specially-abled people,” said Gamlin.
RSERC has also announced plans to invest Rs 50 crore in setting up a centre for excellence for coding, design, data analytics and machine learning, in Ahmedabad over the next two years.
“Our aim is to give training in top-end IT skills and convert them into global knowledge workers. However, to achieve this, we have also created the necessary infrastructure to make our institute accessible for the specially-abled. Our staffers are also trained in sign language to make it easy,” said Anand Madia, senior Advisor, Radical Skills.
More such centres will also come up in other cities including Mumbai, Thane, Noida, and Gangtok among others. The centre aims to train over 500 specially-abled people in the next one year.
