DFID, UK and CSDCI in collaboration with Qualifications for Industry, UK and Larsen & Toubro, India had organized a unique joint pilot Training of Master Trainers (ToMT) programme for Construction Sector Department for International Development (DFID)-Government of United Kingdom, and Construction Skill Development Council of India (CSDCI) organized a 10-day Training of Master Trainers program for Construction Sector. This programme was jointly conducted by Indian training partner, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and UK training partner, Qualification for Industry (QFI).
This was the first Training of Master Trainers (ToMT) program in the sector aimed at creating lead trainers in the areas of Supervisor (Structures) and Supervisor (Finishes) with international best practices in both domain and platform for the sector having a key role in assuring the quality of training services across and within organizations. These Master Trainers will be able to provide training and develop Trainers in these areas in an exponential way thereby leading to improvement of the training ecosystem.
The training program was conducted for two level 6 job roles – Supervisor Structures and Supervisor Finishes, which were chosen based on inputs from the Construction industry. 33 Master Trainers participated in the program from 9 different organizations throughout India. The programs were held at L&T, CSTI Kanchipuram from 18 th February 2019 to 28th February 2019. The trainees gained 2 certifications from these programs – NSDC/CSDCI Certified Master Trainer (for the specific job role), QFI Certificate of Learning Achievement in Construction Work Supervision and QFI Certificate of Professional Achievement in Planning and Delivering Training to Groups (Train the Master Trainer).
During the valedictory session, Ms. Anu Gupta, Head, Skills & Inclusion (DFID-India) gave the opening remarks highlighting the initiatives taken by DFID in various sectors and how the collaboration with UK training bodies can help evolve the training landscape in India. Col Anand Kumar Singh (Retd), CEO, CSDCI, spoke how this first ever-joint ToMT session is important for skilling in Construction sector and how we should use this model to conduct more such sessions in the future. Mr. Ajit John Beck, Head – HR (Workmen) also spoke about continuous learning and importance of ensuring that others in the construction sector to also benefit from the knowledge gained by the trainees in these sessions.
Mr. Richard McClelland, Director, QFI, UK gave a brief presentation on some of the best practices of the UK sector in training and skilling in construction sector. Mr. Sam Kumar, Prosperity Adviser, British Deputy High Commission, Chennai along with other senior dignitaries from L&T, trainers from QFI and L&T were present for the session. QFI Certificate of Learning Achievement in Construction Work Supervision were distributed to the qualified candidates. The other certificates will be given to the trainees post completion of the assessments.
DFID intends to test more such pilots in India and plans to scale up successful pilots under their Skills for Jobs program next year.
