Varanasi: Union minister for skill development and entrepreneurship, Mahendra Nath Pandey flagged off Mobile Skill Vans from Varanasi for upskilling and certifying tyre fitters across the state under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
Flagged off under ‘Saamarth’, a reskilling project of Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC), the mobile vans will take upskilling to auto-mechanics, especially tyre fitters who do not have access to a formal training. Under the programme, fitters will taught to implement best practices and also made aware about health and safety methods to be followed during wheel alignment and changing of tyres.
The ‘Saamarth’ project of RSDC was approved by MSDE to reskill 10 lakh workforce in rubber sector. The skill council has set a target of 64,000 to be trained in manufacturing, natural rubber plantation and tyre service and maintenance. The mobile vans will cover 75 districts and will reskill more than 39,000 tyre fitters.

Flagging off the vans, Pandey said that upskilling and reskilling, whether by upgrading as per the need of industry or capacity building of the existing workforce to make them more productive, is key agenda of the Central government. Introducing mobile skilling units will help those who cannot reach a formal skilling centre, said the minister.
Later, certificates and kits were distributed among candidates undergoing RPL training. The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) has collaborated with RSDC for upskilling tyre fitters. RSDC has taken the lead in training workers in rubber plantation and compression moulding operator, tyre fitting, latex harvest technique etc.
ATMA director general Rajiv Budhraja said that tyre fitters play an important role in smooth functioning of a tyre and the entire logistics supply chain as well. Apart from repairing a damaged tyre, a fitter also plays the role of an adviser, talking to transporters about the condition of the tyre and precautions that need to be taken for improving the life of tyre. RSDC chairman Vinod Simon said that the initiative aims at overall road safety awareness. Tyre services and maintenance is an important part of road safety and economic growth and has a major role in making road transport efficient, he said.
