Tyre industry to train 5 lakh mechanics under government skilling scheme

Chennai: Poor and faulty tyre repair is a major cause for accidents so the tyre industry is putting special focus on skilling and certifying tyre mechanics under a new government scheme. Under the scheme, the Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC) is targeting 5 lakh certified and trained tyre mechanics by 2022.

The focus on tyre mechanics rides on the back of industry impact studies that found 12%-13% of road accidents happen due to faulty tyre fitment or puncture treatment.

This is part of the government’s Saamarth skilling project under which the tyre industry is all set to not only skill, standardise and certify factory workers in tyre and vendor companies but also rubber plantation workers and showroom and workshop hands, said Vinod Simon, chairman, RSDC. The government has lined up a total spend of around Rs 250 crore over 4 years to skill and train one million workers in the rubber industry, he added.

The project will also train and reskill two lakh people in tyre and non-tyre manufacturing and three lakh plantation workers. The ministry of skill development & entrepreneurship, under which this projected is being run, has set a target of one lakh tyre mechanics to be reskilled and certified during the current fiscal itself and, added Simon, RSDC is “all set to cross that target. We have already trained 64,000 people and another 1.5 lakh will be trained by March 31, 2020,” he said.
