Srikakulam : In an attempt to hone skill sets of college students, Dr BR Ambedkar University has decided to set up skill development centres at select degree colleges affiliated to it.
The decision was taken following the instructions of the Higher Education Council and the proposed centres will impart training to students on various skills as per the industry demand, the varsity authorities say.
“The university, in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC), will set up skill development training centres across the district,” University registrar Tulasiram said.
APSSDC delivers a structured, sustainable and scalable framework to impart state of the art skills to the unemployed, underemployed, non-certified and un-benchmarked youngsters in the state. The training programmes will come up in select areas which will offer one-month training to the students, along with the unemployed youth in the area.
The curriculum of the training sessions would be designed keeping the demands of the industries, factories and IT companies in the areas. At the end of the training session, the industry bodies will be invited to organize recruitment drives to ensure jobs for the trained students.
There are 96 degree colleges affiliated to the university and the training sessions would be conducted at Rajam, 21 Century Gurukulam at Etchela, Palakonda, Palasa, Tekkali, Sompeta and other areas.
Tulasiram said that said the unemployed youth and college students can access the services ofo the skill development centres, adding that plans were afoot to train the unemployed youth online, apart from the classroom teaching.
To finalize the modalities of the training schedules in details, the university would soon hold a workshop involving all correspondents, principals and other directors of the degree colleges. Srikakulam Sarada Degree College principal J Purusottam Reddy said that the initiative would certainly the make the students and unemployed youngsters more industry ready. “This is a welcome initiative. We hope that many poor students and unemployed youth will get good benefit of the training sessions,” D Yogeswara Rao, a B.Sc. computer student said.
