Mega skill development centre on the cards for Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam : A mega skill development centre is likely to come up with considerable improvement over the existing one, according to Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha member K. Haribabu.

Major oil companies, including HPCL, who set up the present SDC proposed to expand it and sought 100 acres of site and the district administration is favourably considering it, Mr Haribabu told. KPMG has been appointed consultant and is presently preparing a detailed project report for the expansion.

In the mega SDC more trades are proposed as well as increasing the intake and other facilities and the total outlay is ₹ 550 crore, according to the MP.

He visited the SDC at Arilova located in GVMC building on Thursday and interacted with trainees. The SDC is one of the six centres set up by the oil companies after it was mooted by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

A number of trainees from the North Coastal Andhra and other districts are undergoing training in the second batch. Every batch has a capacity of 300 and 80 % of those who underwent training in the first batch got jobs, Mr. Haribabu said.

All those who complete the training are given a toolkit and they can either take up work on their own or join other companies.

Mr. Haribabu said there was lot of demand for the course and the present SDC with limited capacity was not able to cater to the demand. During his visit, he announced a solar water heater from his MPLAD funds to the girls’ hostel there.
