Jalukbari : Inauguration of a skill development programme (SDP) of the Assam Police Radio Organisation (APRO), accredited by the Department of Electronics and Communication Technology, Gauhati University, was held at the APRO Training School, Jalukbari today.
R Chandranathan, Addl Director General of Police (Commn) Assam in his introductory address spoke on the objective of the programme, saying that, keeping in view the State government’s newly launched policy on skill development, the training programme has been specifically designed and crafted with a view to imparting operating and maintenance skills in the identified areas.
Chandranathan said that this would not only empower the trainees, most of whom come from low socio-economic and educational backgrounds but would also enhance their employment prospects in the near future and also make quality improvement of the Assam Police in terms of keeping pace with advances in technology.
He also spoke about starting summer internship for 2nd semester students of the Deptt of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University from June 1 to help them acquire industry-based IT skills. For this, the process is on for a collaboration with IIT Bombay on Continuing Education and Quality Improvement Programmes (CE & QIP) unit for initiating short courses on leveraging technology in crime prevention and detection and maintenance of law and order for officers of the Assam Police.
A power point presentation was also given on the matter by the guest of honour Prof Tulsi Bezbaruah, HoD, Deptt of Electronics and Communication Technology, GU. He said the SDP is a platform to provide knowledge for future jobs. In this regard best services would be provided by the Gauhati University, which would also provide various courses and guidance, he added.
State DGP Mukesh Sahay, who was the chief guest of the function, commended the role initiated by the APRO on the skill development programme. In his speech he said that the APRO is the technical face of the Assam Police and has been trying to extend its capability of skill to the people of Assam. He lauded the approach and initiative of the APRO and cited that collaboration with academic institutes is the most important aspect in skill development. He advised the participants to struggle towards acquiring skill as it gives one self-respect and self-sufficiency. Without self-respect and self-sufficiency nobody can earn skills, he said.
A presentation on the initiative taken by the APRO for the skill development programme was given by Prasanta Saikia, Superintendent of Police (Commn) Training. Dr Umesh Barman, Director of Police (Commn) Assam, offered the vote of thanks.
