First of its kind premier skill development institute “North East Skill Centre” to become operational from November

Guwahati : A first-of-its-kind premier skill development institute in entire eastern part of the country will commence functioning in Guwahati, Assam’s main city, by the end of this year. The North East Skill Centre (NESC) is coming up in Guwahati. It is being set up by the Assam government, in collaboration with ITES, Singapore, said AP Tiwari, MD, Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM).

He said international certification will be provided to pass outs of the institute, with ITES, Singapore, and ASDM as co-signatories.

The Centre will start it’s one-year courses from November this year with an initial intake of 400 students in three sectors — beauty and wellness, hospitality and tourism, and retail.

Altogether 30 mentors have already been recruited and after their initial training at Guwahati, they are now receiving advanced training at ITES, Singapore.

Tiwari said the NESC is a part of the Skill City project coming up at Mangaldai and the Centre will be expanded to include more courses and students in the future.

The Assam government has invested about Rs 19 crore in setting up the Centre and additional about Rs 3 crore will be required annually, the ASDM MD said.

He further said, “This would be the first such premier institute for skill training in entire eastern India. Orrisa and Jharkhand have institutes and universities in the pipeline but the NESC would be the first to commence”. Similar dedicated, world class skill development institutes, including government run or in PPP mode, are in states like Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, he added.
