Chandigarh : UT education department is planning to introduce skill (vocational) courses for Class IX students in government schools here. Though the number of schools is yet to be decided, the education department is going to propose beginning of vocational courses in five or six more government schools in the upcoming Project Approval Board (PAB) meeting to be held by the ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) every year. Following the approval of the MHRD some Vocational courses will be added in schools, which at present do not have these at Class IX level.
According to officials, in Class IX skill subject is taken as the sixth optional paper. If they fail in any one of the three electives in Class X and are passing in sixth skill paper then a student is declared as pass, an official shared.
Talking about the purpose of introducing skill subjects in Class IX, the official said, “It was done to provide orientation to students towards skill education at an early stage. The motive is to encourage more and more students to opt for skill education”.

Last year, the UT education department had started vocational courses in six government schools for Class IX students, TOI had reported. With this move, the total number of schools had increased to 22 that offered skill courses in Class IX. The education department had introduced a skill subject in artificial intelligence as well in one of the six schools in the present academic session and the department is proposing to start it in more schools in the new academic session beginning in April.
The six schools where skill education was introduced last year are Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 32, Khuda Ali Sher, Kaimbwala, Dhanas, Sarangpur and Government Senior Secondary School in Mauli Jagran. In every school, two skill courses have been introduced.
Besides these, skill education in Class IX is offered in 16 government model senior secondary schools in Sectors 23, 47, 45, 27, 40, 8, 37-D, 22, 33, 19, 37-B, MMC, Karsan and Manimajra town.

The government girls model senior secondary schools where vocational subjects are offered include those in Sectors 20-B and 18. The education department had started offering skill courses from the academic year 2014-15. It was initially offered in six schools. Thereafter, in 2015-16 it was started in four more schools. In the academic years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 two schools were added each year, respectively.
In all schools, option of two skill subjects is provided to the students. The subjects already being offered in all schools include information technology, automobile technology, retail, beauty and wellness and artificial intelligence (in one school only). However, from 2019-20, two new subjects were being offered – apparel and food production.
