Chandigarh : The Directorate of Technical Education and Industrial Training has disaffiliated six private Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) as these were found lacking in terms of infrastructure and faculty. The discrepancies were mostly related to deficiency of space and shortage of equipment and machinery.
The action against the erring ITIs comes close on the heels of the government cancelling the affiliation of seven private polytechnics and three pharmacy colleges that too were found wanting on similar parameters.
During the academic session 2017-18, a joint departmental inspection was carried out in 250 private ITIs. Following this, the directorate wrote to the affiliating authority — Director General Training (DGT), Union Ministry of Skill Development — and recommended disaffiliation of specific courses being run in 45 ITIs.
Using a clause in the affiliation terms and conditions that allows for a review of the decision, some of the erring institutes requested for a re-inspection after they removed the anomalies. “Following the inspection, the department again wrote to the DGT and recommended that the affiliation of 19 institutes should not be withdrawn and they be allowed to admit students for the academic session 2018-19,” said a senior government functionary.
As a consequence of such strict measures, the private institutions have witnessed a fall in the admissions this year compared to government ITIs. So far, six institutes have been disaffiliated and cases of other institutes were being examined.
