New Delhi : The YUVA Scheme was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on August 29 last year with the objective of engaging and steering street children and the youth towards the mainstream of society and providing them with opportunities to realise their potential and creating awareness about their potential through skill development training.
Initially, eight police stations in the national Capital were selected for setting up of skill centres and 36 training partners and 45 skills were identified in consultation with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Boys and girls between 17 and 25 years were selected for the training. Most of them belonged to the underprivileged colonies and were divided into the categories, such as school dropouts, juvenile offenders, victims of crimes, families in a dire state due to the incarceration of the bread earner of the family.
As many as 2,900 youths have been imparted training in the eight police stations whereas 198 youths were referred to training centres outside the police stations. Thirteen job fairs and seven in-house placement drives had been organized. Banking and finance workshops for trainees were also organized to sensitize the trainees about the opportunity to set up their own business. So far, around 1,600 youths have been selected for jobs in various companies, including Fortis Health Care, Hero Motocorp, Vodafone, Burger King, among others for a handsome salary.
