Chennai : With manufacturing sector moving towards digitization, industries, the Centre and State governments should all work towards skilling the workforce and empowering them, says Vikram Kapur, Principal Secretary (Industries), Government of Tamil Nadu.
Addressing a conference on the Tamil Nadu Manufacturing industry, organized by the CII on the topic ‘Leveraging Digital Manufacturing’, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Kapur said that digitization has affected every spectrum of manufacturing like process, control system, finance and manpower has become imminent.
“Now the important challenge with digitization is, how to empower workers in this new age of technologies,” Kapur said. “Skill development centres at the Centre and State level, should take steps to address this issue. There is a need to take a look at curriculum in educational institutions and delivery system in companies to ensure that workers understand how digital manufacturing works and work with them,” he added.
There are lot of opportunities in the age digitization, as it generates enormous amount of data. Data can be used to analyze current system and re-engineer our processes and expand our markets. “The companies should share data and allow teams to work on them to come with better solutions for the issues. If not, you will hit your limit,” Kapur said.
Kapur said Tamil Nadu continues to be manufacturing hub due it availability of land, manpower, infrastructure and robust connectivity. Though recent survey has ranked Tamil Nadu 18 in terms of ease of doing business, he said the State has retained its robust business sentiment. In the Global Investor Meet held last year, of 98 MoUs were signed, 68 projects worth investment of ₹87,000 crore have already been implemented.
Though there are challenges regarding the clearances, compliance and sharing data, he said steps are being taken to resolve the issue.
