Ferozepur : The border district Ferozepur, considered “industrially backward”, has shown the way in generating self-employment and skill development initiatives for the unemployed youth. So far, seven skill development centres with state-of-the-art training facilities have been launched in the district where more than 1,800 unemployed boys and girls have started earning anything between Rs12,000 and Rs15,000 per month.
DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner, said: “We have started two more centres at Pojo Ke Hithar and Katora villages recently where schoolbags, uniforms, bags etc. are made.” He added that the support for marketing and sale of the produce has also been provided so that the youth get good remuneration for their work. Similarly, woolen scarves, caps, gloves and socks were made at another centre in city. The officer said around 500 youth had been provided loans under the DRI scheme with an installment of Rs10 per day to start their own ventures. He said the administration had also prepared a data bank of all unemployed youth of the district for which a special cell had been set up which would facilitate their liaison with various banks and vocational training institutions, besides industrial houses in Ludhiana.
“Our effort is to ensure that no youth of the region remains without a vocation,” the DC said, adding that while the banks were being encouraged to provide maximum loans. Various departments like dairy development, fisheries, floriculture, agriculture, and industries had been instructed to provide guidelines and resources to train the youth.
