Chandigarh : To push its ITIs to perform better, the Haryana Government has decided to introduce competition among these government institutes by introducing star rating based on various parameters, including pass percentage and industry exposure.
Under the programme, an ITI can earn a maximum of 10 stars based on its performance. While career advancement will earn an ITI four stars, three stars will be allocated for quality of training and three under industry exposure.
The Skill Development and Industrial Training Department has divided these points under these heads to include pass percentage, trainees with distinction, jobs the passouts land up with and number of students that go for self-employment or higher education. Each of these carries one star, which goes on to decide the ratings.
According to information received so far, the ITIs in Kalka and Panipat are on top, having earned six stars. The complete list of ratings of ITIs will be put up in the public domain before the end of the month to give the students a fair idea of where each ITI stands while the admission process to various courses is on. A soft launch of this exercise was done by the department on Thursday.

“We have a set of very doable parameters for ITIs to improve. This will promote healthy competition among ITIs to outdo each other, benefiting students. By bringing this information in the public domain, we want students to know beforehand where a particular ITI stands, bringing in transparency,” said Devender Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Industry and Skill Development.
Though the admission process to ITIs began on Thursday and the list of ITIs based on their performance was out, officers maintained that there were others which had not sent information so far and a complete list would be on the website by the end of the week.
“This is essentially self-certified information provided by the ITI concerned. It will be formally launched by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on July 15 which is celebrated as World Skill Day. The top five ITIs will be honoured,” said Prabhjot Singh, Director, Skill Development and Industrial Training.
“Though this star rating is essentially for government ITIs, we want 242 private ITIs to come forward and participate to know where they stand,” he said. He added that star rating was a dynamic process and positions could keep changing based on performance.
