District Industries Centre (DIC) set target of entrepreneurial skill development of over 4,000 youth

Mysuru : The District Industries Centre (DIC) has set a target to provide comprehensive training in entrepreneurial skill development for over 4,000 youth across Mysuru in the current year, to enable them to become self-employed. This will help trained youth become entrepreneurs.

H. Ramakrishne Gowda, Joint Director, DIC, told The Hindu that a new ‘Disha’ office would be opened soon at the DIC premises and staff of the office would visit all government colleges and provide information, education, training, employment and entrepreneurial skill development to students.

He said the scheme was being implemented jointly by the District Industries Centre, and Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Departments under the Disha project of UNDP and supported by IKEA Foundation.

Staff recruitment

The State government had commenced recruiting staff for the programme in March and the process of appointing them to district centres was stopped owing to the Election Code of Coduct, Mr. Gowda said.

The department would identify students keen to establish their own units. “Once potential entrepreneurs are identified and trained, efforts will be made to ensure credit-flow through financial institutions to kick-start their projects,” he said.

Follow up

The beneficiaries would be constantly monitored till they set up units. There would be follow up programmes to ensure they are discouraged by teething problems, Mr. Gowda said.

Though the scheme was originally confined to women, it has been extended to men. There are a number of schemes like PMEGP, CMEGP, MUDRA, Start up India, and Make in India to help unemployed youth, all of which would be tapped.

Mr. Manjunathaswamy, Joint Director, CEDOK, said trainers would visit colleges across the district to create awareness on entrepreneurship skills and potential among the students from June.

Mr. Gowda said the department would also seek the help of industries, if needed, to train the youth in setting up and management of industries.
