Bengaluru : The Karnataka state government is working on a jobs portal to help private sector firms recruit candidates skilled under the government programmes. The government has tied up with the UN Development Programme for this initiative.
The government wants to transform the conventional employment exchanges in districts, and sync the recruitment process with market trends. There is an estimated 3.5 lakh jobs vacant in the private sector, and the positions keep changing according to market dynamics.
Skills Development Minister RV Deshpande reviewed the skill development department’s programmes, on Monday, and briefed the media about his plans. The department, he said, will enrol online the candidates trained under government funding, put up their profiles and connect them with potential employers through the proposed online portal.
The JD(S)-Congress regime has stepped up its focus on jobs in light of unemployment likely to become an important issue ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections which the coalition partners plan to fight together against the BJP.
Karnataka, however, has a robust economy and accounts for third of India’s software exports. According to the last Labour Ministry survey, Karnataka has the second lowest unemployment rate after Gujarat, and has been able to add jobs due to sustained growth in GSDP.
Fresh graduates and youth will need to learn new skills that the market requires in order to become employable. The challenge of unemployment will grow bigger in the days to come with newer technologies and automation making many jobs obsolete, Deshpande said.
