Skill development centre at KIMS to provide training on emergency cases

Hubballi: A skill development centre in emergency management will soon come up on the premises of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The centre will provide training to medical and nursing staff of taluk government hospitals in emergency cases like heart attack and accidents.

The Union health department has approved the centre and sanctioned Rs 3 crore, of which Rs 1.40 crore has been released in the first phase. This is the first skill development centre sanction by the Union health ministry to KIMS, said its director Dr Dattatraya Bant. “The process has been initiated to begin the centre in the next six months,” said Bant.

“Most of the times nursing staff at PHCs and other health centres of the government would hesitate to initiate measures if any patient comes with heart attack, major road accidents and others due to fear as they don’t get such cases regularly. If the nursing staff is provided proper training along with demonstration of putting patients on ventilators, taking precautionary measures during emergency, then, it will be easier for them to attend to cases in emergency,” said Bant.

A team of experts at KIMS attended training sessions at AIIMS on teaching the medical staff. Other teams will also be sent to AIIMS. The experts will be ready with the teaching module of maximum for five days before the centre starts. “Keeping in mind the smooth functioning of taluk hospitals and PHCs, the module of training will be designed,” he added.

According to sources, the Centre recently decided to set up two more skill development centres in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi. Documentation and other works are said to be under process. Dr Prabhu Biradar, HDMC health officer, said that there is a dire need for such skill development centres.
