Kollam : Skill development programmes should undergo timely upgrade to meet the diverse demands of the labour market, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. He was speaking at the State-level inauguration of Community Skill Parks (CSP) at Kulakkada here on Saturday. “The government wants to make accessible various skill development services to the public. It is a matter of pride that the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) could train around 1.3 lakh persons,” he said.
Launched by ASAP, a joint initiative of the General and Higher Education Departments, CSPs are specially designed training facilities of international standard with built-up area of more than 25,000 sq ft. The units will be managed by prominent industries as operating partners in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The CSP at Kulakkada is the first to be inaugurated among the 17 CSPs planned in the current phase.
Eight more CSPs will be commissioned in Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayand and Kasargod in February and March.
“Skill development is necessary to survive in fields that demand expertise. Of late, a lot of people, including those from the IT sector, have lost their jobs and one reason for this is the failure in refining their skills,” said Mr. Vijayan adding that the park at Kulakkada would be convenient for aspirants from Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts as well.
