Chackai : The Kerala government will set up a ‘skill lyceum’ of global standards to foster fresh ventures, innovative ideas and research in skill development, State Minister for Labour, Skills and Excise, T P Ramakrishnan, said today.
He was inaugurating the four-day zonal competitions of ‘India Skills Kerala 2018,’ organized by the Industrial Training Department and Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE), at Government ITI, Chackai here. The zonal competitions are being held at three centres, including Chalakkudy and Kozhikode.
Observing that adhering to global standards in skill education and training is essential to achieve excellence in a highly competitive world, Ramakrishnan said skill development of the youth was a priority area for the government.
KASE has been tasked with the mission of skill development in the state to provide expert training for the youth in various trades and vocations. The government will bring in drastic changes in the commercial training projects and the standard of the ITIs will be upgraded, he said.
“Since the present government assumed power, about new nine ITIs have been set up. As part of the revamp, courses in trades with little job opportunities will not be offered anymore, replacing them with new courses,” he said.
Work is in progress to upgrade the ITIs at Chackai and Kozhikode as international institutions. The ITIs at Katappana, Chengannur, Dhanuvachapuram, Kollam, Ettumanur, Chalakkudy, Malambuzha, Quoilandy, Kannur and Kayyur will also be upgraded to global standard institutions with the help of the state’s infrastructure development agency KIIFB, he added.
The minister also announced that an accident insurance scheme would be implemented for ITI trainees.
