Kochi : The district administration on Friday launched a programme under the Naipunya scheme to train transgenders in skills of their choice. This is part of the Deen Dayal Upadyay Grameen Kaushal Yojna programme under which the Kudumbasree Mission is taking up the responsibility of skill development.
Around 50 transgenders participated in the meeting that also presented business opportunities to them. It is a mobilization process to get transgenders hone their skills, said a Kudumbasree official. The participants raised concerns about accommodation and placements, which were among the key issues keeping them away from mainstream society. An official said that accommodation would be provided for them during the training programme.
Those completing the course will be given placements in accordance with their interests and abilities, said a statement from the Public Relations Department. Front office-cum-receptionists, sales associates, security supervisor, and house keeping are among the jobs in which training is being imparted. Computer skills, communicative English, and soft skills are part of the study programme.
Rajagiri College and Congregation of Mother of Carmel are among the institutions that will be part of the training programme. Classes will be held on the Rajagiri College campus. To start with, 35 persons will be trained in a three-month course.
