Mumbai : The skill development and entrepreneurship department led by BJP leader Sambhaji Patil-Nilangekar on Thursday set up a four-member committee headed by additional chief secretary (industries) Sunil Porwal to probe a “Rs 100 crore scam” in the vocational education and training department from 2011 to 2014.
Deputy secretary Sakharam Dina Kharat has directed the committee to submit two reports within two months. A preliminary report on the state of affairs in the directorate of vocational education and training (DVET) was submitted to the government on October 18, 2014. In the wake of a series of complaints on rampant irregularities and corruption in purchase of equipments for 417 government-run industrial training institutes (ITIs), then DVET director J P Bhotmange had found corruption in purchase of equipment between 2011and 2014 and submitted a report in October 2014.
“In two letters, Bhotmange had urged the state government to set up a high level committee to probe the Rs 100 crore scam,” a senior official said.
Under the terms of reference, the committee will have to examine if there was a nexus between suppliers and DVET officials that resulted in a Rs 100 crore loss, and whether rules were followed.
