Over 50 institutes in division get nod for vocational courses

Kolhapur : Over 50 institutes have received the nod for operating vocational training courses, from Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK). In a recent circular, the university announced the colleges that have received the approval to conduct the courses and their duration.

The courses range from three to 12 month period, with fees as low as Rs 300 and as high as Rs 10,000. There are 22 courses which are of more than six month duration, while 13 courses areless of than 4 months of duration. The eligibility criteria for some of these courses are passing class X, and for other courses a willing mind is all that is required.

According to a university official, these are very basic but skill-based courses. After the completion of the courses, candidates will have better employment opportunities.

The courses that Lokvikas Kendra of SUK offers are— spoken english, computer hardware maintenance, fitness training, operation theatre assistant, medical emergency services, film and drama acting certificate, gardening management, certificate courses in hospital management among others.

An official said that there are around 10 institutes, situated in Kolhapur, while the rest have a good reach in urban as well as rural areas of Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts.

According to Manjusha Deshpande, director, centre for community development, the university’s expert team can visit the approved institutes anytime to check the progress of the courses. If progress is found to be unsatisfactory the courses from the said institute can be cancelled. The centre for community development has asked the institutes to submit a list of students admitted, to the SUK, by September 30.
