Assam : The State unit of the North Eastern Small Scale Industries Association (NESSIA) led by its State president Sailen Baruah and general secretary Kumud Chandra Medhi submitted a memorandum calling for a national policy for MSME to the Chairman of the Committee on Industrial Policy, Prabhat Kumar, former Cabinet Secretary, Govt. of India and also former Governor, Jharkhand, during an interaction held at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship with industry bodies and officials of different north-eastern states. Surendra Nath Tripathi, Additional Secretary & Development Commissioner, (MSME), Govt. of India was also present.
During the interaction with Kumar, Baruah and Medhi suggested a separate policy of MSME for the north-eastern states, particularly in the micro sector for the growth of industries in rural areas on locally available resources to provide maximum employment opportunities. “Rural and agro-based industries should be encouraged. Our rural youths should be given skill development training on the non-farming sector like piggery, fishery, floriculture, and medicinal herb cultivation, traditional cluster-based tiny and micro units. Assam loses nearly Rs 10,000 crore yearly due to import of fish, eggs, broiler, flower, pulses and other items,” Baruah said.
