Dharwad: Imparting skill-based education will increase employability of youths, said Mindtree co-founder Subroto Bagchi.
Addressing the first batch of graduates at the first convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-D) here on Saturday, he said the number of students dropping out of schools and colleges is on the rise. To make them employable, skill-based vocational courses should be encouraged, he added.
Bagchi opined that information technology was a remarkable frontier of human intellect and endeavour that has pervasive impact of life and living in myriad dimensions. It is impossible to think of the future of humankind without the contribution of information science and technology, he added.
“When the IT boom began in India in the 1980s it was at a very nascent stage. People who were instrumental in creating the foundation for the now iconic Indian IT industry were clearly riding a wave at sunrise. But even after four decades, there is so much more yet to happen. The newness and impact of science & IT will be so vast that the present generation will still be considered pioneers by people who come in the next generation,” he said.

“For every 100 children born in India, only 95 probably get enrolled in school. Of these, only 70% will ever complete high school. This means a vast number of children in India are out of school. It is staggering that 60 lakh children, almost the entire population of Singapore, are school dropouts. They lack skills and hence, contribute to unemployment,” he said.
Presiding over the function, the chairperson of the board of governors of IIIT-D, Sudha Murty said higher education should help youths inculcate the spirit of unity, professionalism, dignity of labour and culture. Youths should learn to work as a team instead of engaging in working alone to succeed in their mission, she said.
“As many girls refrain from taking up higher education due to lack of hostels, Infosys has decided to donate a girls’ hostel to the IIIT-D so that more girls enrol here,” she said.
One should learn to respect parents, teachers and elders. That is the culture of India, she added. As many as 29 candidates were awarded degrees at the convocation. Toppers S S Ameer, Gourav Gupta and Venturi Naveen received gold medals from Subroto Bagchi.
IIIT-D director Kavi Mahesh welcomed the gathering. Registrar S Basavaraj proposed a vote of thanks. Registrar (evaluation) Jagadish was present. Maya Raman compered.
