Panjab University is open to granting autonomous status to its colleges. The university, which has 192 affiliated colleges, has not received any proposal to grant autonomous status to any college in the recent past, even though some colleges have received Grade A in the NAAC ranking.
Dean, College Development Council, Panjab University, Parvinder Singh, said the university has already delegated academic autonomy to the affiliated colleges with their active role in almost all academic functioning such as the Board of Studies, Academic Council, faculties, Senate and Syndicate to deliberate upon important issues related to their functioning.
“At the moment, the college management and other stakeholders are satisfied with this academic autonomy. PU authorities will always happily welcome any such proposal where autonomous status is requested as per the norms,” he said.
RUSA representative Daleep Sharma said, “The colleges are not keen to have autonomous status due to the branding of the university. Appreciating the focus of the government on skill development, he said if properly implemented, employment generation will increase. He said the present system of higher education contributes only marginally to the skill development of students.
Director, UGC-HRD Centre, PU, Prof Karamjeet Singh, said, “Autonomous status to the colleges was the agenda at a recent meeting of the UGC in which it was pointed out that to cut down on university interference, the college should go for autonomous status.”
