20 percent drop in Undergraduate enrollment in Panjab University, students opting skill based choices

Chandigarh : There has been a 20% drop in the number of applications received for undergraduate courses, including BSc (hons) in Panjab University this year. The university has received only 4,430 applications, less than that recorded in the last few years. Last year, the University received around 5,500 applications.

“Students are focusing on skill-oriented courses. Courses like BSc (hons) and BPharma need time investment in terms of career. You have to do masters and then PhD. So it’s a long process when you think in terms of employment. Also, students are discouraged because teachers are not paid well in Punjab,” said Devinder Mehta, coordinator, admissions, PU CET (UG) at Panjab University. Mehta also said parents prefer to send students abroad over spending the same amount of money on their education in India.

“These days, students are more attracted to commerce, courses like BBA and BCom. In general sciences, they prefer BCA and not honours school. One reason could be that placements after pursuing BSc (hons) is less,” said Prof B S Bhoop, professor at University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Candidates can fill their preferences online for B Pharma and BSc (Hons) courses from June 27 to July 1. The provisional merit list will be displayed on the website on July 6. Candidates can report in the respective departments on the basis of the seat allocation list (1st online counseling) from July 9 to July 11. The second list of seat allocation will be done on July 13. The second round of online counseling will be held from July 16 to July 18.
