Punjab govt’s unique skill development training program benefits underprivileged youth in the state

Jalandhar : Punjab government’s unique initiative aimed at enhancing employability and potential among youngsters by sharpening their soft and communication skills through the district-level training program is proving to be a boon for the students from weaker and underprivileged sections.

The Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) has taken the initiative to train the youngsters in skills like reading, writing and speaking English thereby enabling them to compete with their peers across the globe. This course started in Women Polytechnic College Ladowali road has got a huge response from youngsters who have enrolled themselves under this training program.

Divulging more details, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma said the course was kicked off from May 5 and since then these students were imparted training everyday for two hours. He said during the course, youngsters would be imparted training for a total of 120 hours. Sharma also said the fee for economically weaker sections of society was Rs 500 whereas for other students the fee of course was Rs 1,000. The Deputy Commissioner further said any person between the age group of 18-35 years could apply for this training program in which besides reading, writing and speaking English, they were also being trained in business communication, group discussions and presentation skills. He further said the training program was all the more important as it also focused on personality development, especially business etiquettes, personal grooming, interview readiness and body language, which could be instrumental in ensuring job to the youngsters.

Sharma said that the curriculum of the training has been set by the experts of the Regional Institute of English (RIE) and Chandigarh EFLU (English and Foreign Language University), to ensure that the youngsters were trained in the best possible manner. He further said during the training program the officials of the District Bureau of Employment and Enterprise were also guiding the youngsters about different vistas of job, so that they could be gainfully employed.

Block Thematic Manager Social Mobilization under PSDM Mandeep Kaur said that this training program was going on successfully and students were immensely gaining from it. She further said the aspirants who want to join this program could register themselves for the training program by visiting the website www.psdm.gov.in or visit the office of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) and register themselves by contacting skill development staff.
